Port Authority to seek
owners of WTC photos
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced plans to create a Web site in an effort to find the owners of about 8,000 photographs recovered from the World Trade Center site following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks.
Beginning 18 January 2005, victims' families will be able to view the password-protected Web site and claim photographs that belonged to their loved ones.
"The tragedy that occurred on September 11 has left family members and other tenants looking for whatever mementos they can find that will remind them of the happier times that existed before that fateful day," said Anthony Coscia, chairman of the Port Authority.
The Manhattan Development Corp. was scheduled to begin mailing letters to survivors' families with instructions on how to access the Web site.
The photographs are being held by the New York Police Department, which will handle claims for the photos. [2005.01] | TOP

Abraham Lincoln portrait
fetches $85,000 at auction
An 1863 portrait of Abraham Lincoln by Alexander Gardner drew $85,000 at auction a record amount for an unsigned photograph of the former president in Los Angeles on 23 November 2004.
The 16-by-19-inch photograph depicts the Lincoln seated with his head in his hand.
"It's a very human pose," Catherine Williamson, director of books and manuscripts for the auction house, told the AP. "He looks more like a man lost in thought at work than the guy on the $5 bill." [2004.12] | TOP
